Fantasy hockey dynasty rankings: Scott Wheelers Top 100 keepers for 2023-24

Welcome to my inaugural fantasy hockey dynasty rankings at The Athletic.

This is a project I’ve promised readers ahead of the past couple of NHL seasons, but haven’t had the bandwidth in previous years to put together in time for the season. Now, finally, it’s done: a complete ranking of the Top 100 25-and-under players for fantasy hockey dynasty and keeper leagues.

Note that this list differs from Dom Luszczyszyn’s essential fantasy hockey cheat sheet, which should be your starting point for all leagues, but especially standard, single-season leagues and smaller keeper leagues.

The focus here is to create a resource for managers in larger (in teams), deeper (in roster size), longer-term leagues. In building these rankings, my eye was to projecting these players across the next five years. The 25-and-under criteria was chosen so that all of the players being considered will play the entirety of that five-year window in their teens or 20s. (Of course, 26-year-old superstars like Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews should still be prioritized in dynasty leagues.)

Considered in determining each player’s value were their statistical profile for standard fantasy hockey counting categories (with particular emphasis on points), their age (a huge factor in this exercise), their health/availability, their pathway to the top of their NHL team’s lineup (with particular emphasis on PP1 upside and opportunity), and their potential projected linemates in the short and medium term (it’s harder to chart long-term linemates because of the NHL’s turnover).

Goalies were not included due to their outsized value and wider year-to-year variance. Prospects eligible in upcoming NHL drafts were also not included, but will be folded in annually. Where available, listed positions are according to Yahoo!’s dataset as of September 20, 2023.
